Sizing Information

Hockey Stick Size Guide

For most adult and teenage players, choosing a field hockey stick really comes down to two sizes: 36.5” or 37.5”. These lengths account for the vast majority of sticks sold and will suit almost all players once basic height and comfort are considered.

The table below provides a general guide based on height, but should be used as a starting point rather than a strict rule.

Player Height

Suggested Stick Length

Under 4’8” (142 cm)

30”–32”

4’8” – 5’0” (142–152 cm)

32”–33”

5’0” – 5’3” (152–160 cm)

33”–34”

5’3” – 5’7” (160–170 cm)

34”–35”

5’7” – 5’10” (170–178 cm)

36.5”

5’10” – 6’2” (178–188 cm)

36.5” or 37.5”

Over 6’2” (188+ cm)

37.5”

In practice:

  • Players under ~5’10” will almost always be best suited to a 36.5”
  • Players over ~6’0” often prefer a 37.5”, particularly if they value reach

Why Height Isn’t the Whole Story

Although height is the easiest reference point, stick length isn’t an exact science. Arm length, posture, flexibility, and playing style all influence what feels right. Some taller players prefer the tighter control of a 36.5”, while some average-height players enjoy the extra reach of a 37.5”, especially in defensive roles.

Because 36.5” and 37.5” are so close in size, the “correct” option often comes down to feel rather than measurement.

The Importance of Trying a Stick in Person

The best way to choose between a 36.5” and 37.5” is to hold both. Stand naturally with the stick on the ground in front of you — the top of the stick should generally sit between your hip bone and waist. From there, take a few practice movements: dribbling, passing, and assuming your normal playing stance. The right stick should feel comfortable without forcing you too upright or too low.

Ultimately, comfort and control matter far more than the number printed on the stick. Use the guide to narrow your options, but trust how the stick feels in your hands.
