Shimano’s second tier groupset goes semi-wireless and moves to 12-speed for 2022!

Shimano’s infamous Ultegra grouspset has seen some major updates compared to the previous 11-speed iteration, most notably now only available in Di2 rather than being available in a mechanical guise as well. Not only this, but the groupset has also gained an extra cog in the cassette, as well as ditching the cables from the shifters to what would have been a junction box in favor of a Bluetooth connection between shifter and derailleur. These are just some of the major updates that Ultegra has received, however some other tweaks include:

· An Ultegra level power meter option

· Direct charging negates the need for a junction box. Lights on the shifters display battery charge.

· New lever ergonomics for improved shifting in the drops and braking on the hoods. The length of the hood has grown by 4.6mm to allow for more comfort, as well as being slightly inward facing to allow for a more aerodynamic hand position.

· Servo wave braking technology, borrowed from Shimano’s gravel specific groupset, GRX Di2

· Wider clearance around the brake rotor for quieter brakes.

Introduced alongside the brands flagship groupset Dura-Ace R9200, the new Ultegra equipment also offers much faster shifting from the shifters to the front and rear derailers making this the most advanced drivetrain technology and shifting performance to date from Shimano. You can also run satellite shifters into an accessory port located under the hoods of the shifters if you prefer to have shifters on the tops as well.

There are two cassette options including an 11-30T option or 11-34T for those that prefer climbing. Shimano themselves say that; Whether climbing, descending, or hitting the flats, ULTEGRA’s gear options encourage steady and smooth pedaling so riders can switch off and enjoy the ride more freely.”

Both cassettes feature Shimano’s latest HyperGlide+ technology which allows for the smoothest possible shifting up and down the block, and enables the rider to shift gears under full pedaling load, perfect for the performance orientated rider in a competitive scenario.

There are also two chainset options, including either a 52-36 – or 50-34 depending again on the conditions and terrain the rider is likely to face.

Not only has the Ultegra groupset been overhauled, but The Ultegra wheelset range has also been updated. Now all of the Ultegra wheelset’s are carbon and tubeless ready, and available in different rim depths from 36mm, 50mm or 60mm to suit different riding situations. All of these wheels have an internal rim width of 21mm to suit modern performance road tyres. Across the range, the wheels offer exceptional rigidity, faster aerodynamics and reduced weight over previous generations and are sure to enable any rider to smash PB’s and feel more confident riding in varying conditions.
